Are You Being a Good Training Partner?
“As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.”— Proverbs 27:17
“Iron sharpens iron” is something we hear a lot on the Tatame (Jiu jitsu mats). We might use it to compliment our training partners after a competition win, a hard training session, or when we need to muster up that little something extra to finish a class strong. You might hear your coaches reminding you to “be a good training partner,” but it’s time we are going to explore exactly what that means.
What does it mean to be a good training partner?
Good training partners do a number of things. Primarily, they are always ready to go as soon as coach says to begin. Doing this allows our partners to get as many reps in as possible during the round (remember when we talked about the importance of drilling). Being ready is only part of the job, though. Good training partners are also ACTIVE training partners. When we practice a guard pass, even though we are on our backs we don’t just want to lay there like a slug, we want our feet up in a ready position and our reactions to be realistic. While it might not seem so important, being in a ready position and reacting correctly does two things: 1. it helps our training partner know what they can expect their opponent to do, so they can either finish the technique, or move on to the next position, and 2. it reinforces our own reaction to the move our partner is training. As a good training partner we actually make ourselves better by practicing the reaction to the move our partner is training! In Muay Thai when our partner throws a combination that we defend, they get the practice of linking their strikes and we get the practice of defending them!
Am I being a good training partner?
Even though Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai are individual sports in combat, we are all part of a team. Recently, we had 4 robots earn their black belts! We had even more people earn their blue belts, purple belts, and countless stripes! All of this progress couldn’t have happened without everyone working together. Let’s remember that when we’re on the mat: we’re all working together toward the same goal. Do our best to help each other get there!
