Hey Bots and Bot Parents!
History Lesson on Brazilian Jiu jitsu
1) In 1914 a man named Esai Maeda (a.k.a. Conde Koma) emigrated from Japan to Brazil to start a new life. Once in Brazil Maeda met a man businessman named Gastao Gracie. Gastao helped to get Maeda on his feet and having no way to repay Gastao for his kindness, he offered to teach traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu (Judo) to the oldest Gracie son, Carlos. Having studied Judo under its creator, Maeda was an excellent ambassador for the art. Carlos was a quick study, and after only a few years he began to teach it to his five brothers but the youngest son of Gastao, Helio, was too weak and frail to train. Some even suggested that he had a condition where his bones would break with only a slight impact. Still fascinated with the techniques he watched his brothers practice and absorbed as much as he could. At 16 years old, Helio was waiting at his brother’s academy for class to start when Carlos was nowhere to be found. Helio taught the entire class, showing the techniques he had watched his brothers practice 1000 times. Carlos finally arrived at the end of class and apologized to his students. To his surprise, the students told Carlos that Helio taught a great class and they would like to continue to learn from him. From that day forward Helio became an instructor. Because he was so small, Helio realized that many techniques were difficult for him to execute. To fix this problem, he modified the techniques (through thousands of repetitions and trial and error) to make them more efficient using leverage and timing over strength and speed. After years of practice, Helio Gracie had modified almost all of the traditional Judo techniques he had been taught and unknowingly became the father of what we know as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
